For Love Or Money

MAKING THE FILM

The film has 3 primary locations.  Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York, but filming can be completed in Las Vegas and New York.  The Los Angeles scenes, and some interior scenes set in New York can be filmed in Las Vegas.  We have outlined a 6 week period for principle photography.

We envision this film to feel both contemporary and retro.  The film is divided into 2 greatly different time frames, the present day and the 1990s. The present day is easy to bring to life, but the 1990s sets need to look and feel like the time period.  Wardrobe, hairstyles, furnishings, cars, and of course the absence of the technologies we are addicted to today, like cell phones. This means that some of the storytelling will rely on phone conversations, which played a huge role in the band’s 1990s life.  They will be shown in split screen.

Because this film focuses on a band, during the 1990s pinnacle of the music industry era, we will use music video style montage storytelling to immerse the viewer into the experiences of the band at key moments in our story.

We will also use multiple split screen elements in story telling to bring to life a couple day in the life montage segments, illustrating the differences in the band members individual lives.

We will draw upon the visual language used in Steven Soderbergh’s Oceans 11, 12 and 13 trilogy stylistically, specifically in the montage elements of our film. The film will feel cinematic,  it will not feel like reality TV.

The film will have many scenes of songs being written, practiced, and developed.  It is crucial that the viewer feels like they are in the room with the musicians whenever they are performing.  To achieve this we will record a 12 song soundtrack as if recording a band live.   These core tracks will be the key to recreating authentic live music scenes that make the viewer feel like they are actually in a nightclub or rehearsal seeing a band play. We will then layer additional tracks into the songs, to show how the songs grow from the first ideas of songwriting, through honing them in live gigs to polished songs ready for 1990s radio play.

The present day scenes will focus on present day Randy and Dave in a bar setting.  They will be shot in a gritty way, with strong emphasis on the conversation that is happening, while a lively roadhouse bar swirls around them.  We will see a lot of background activity, which will contrast with the tone of their conversation.

We plan to capture the film in 12K, allowing for maximum fidelity in our master image of the film.  It will look and sound gorgeous, to juxtapose the gritty nature of the story.  This will not feel like a documentary or reality TV production.  It is intended to be highly cinematic in image and sound. Motion with the camera will be incorporated to emphasis the story as it unfolds on the screen.
